2015 Sequoia Grove Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Review
I’ll be real witcha - I bought this wine because it got a 93 from my homies at Wine Spectator and at $34 that’s a steal, friends. There are a lot of 93 wines out there that are in the three digits in terms of price. I’ve not had any wines from this vintner so I was excited to try it - BUT MY WIFE HAS. STORY TIME! We had some folks over a few weeks back and I bought this exact bottle to review and my wife and some visiting ladies got into it and KILLED IT before I could get my grimy hands on it. So I asked her what she thought and she said, “good.” So there ya go. It’s good.
Anyway, as I mentioned I have not had any wine from this vintner so I’m always excited to see if the rating fits what they’re throwing down. Again, you never know if the reviewer shares your flavor profile / palate but I was willing to take a chance at $34. The nose on this dude is filled with oak - who knows I may be talking out of my ass as they could very well age in stainless. Either way I get oak on the nose. Additionally, I didn’t get a lot of overbearing fruit notes which I don’t think match well with anything that exudes the oak.
As I was hoping the taste would compliment the oak world and it did! It is primarily earth / soil mixed with a tad bit of a tart cherry. Nothing overpowering from a fruit standpoint which was delightful. I like when there are some tannins with a wine because it’s like HEY BRUH IMMA HANG OUT IN YA MOUTH FOR A BIT SO WE CAN GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER (what a horrible choice of words) but this wine had like 4.3 tannins too many. And you never go over 4. Other than that this was an absolutely delightful wine.
I’m sure there are some very nice double glazed Pop Tarts you could pair this with but honestly I just enjoyed drinking this while yelling at my kids to go to sleep. If you want to get a damn fine wine at a reasonable price look no further - please check this one out and think of me while you put it in ya mouth.
