Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 12 Scotch Review
I've always been a big fan of Glenmorangie products and the Glenmorangie 10 Year is actually one of the first scotches I had that started me on this hellacious journey. I've had this bottle for quite a while and wasn't even sure if it was open or not - I peeked inside and sure enough it was open and was real mad at me for not visiting in a hot minute.
This Glenmorangie offering is aged 10 years in American oak casks and then transferred to Port "pipes" (casks that can vary in size) from GUESS WHERE?! PORTUGAL! THAT'S RIGHT! When aged in Port casks I believe it gives the scotch a sweeter flavor but allows the whisky to truly take on more complex flavors. Many will argue the opposite but they are probably not a trained professional liar like me.
On the nose you get very intense syrup aromas that fill the olfactory system. One thing that turns me on to certain alcohols is when you take a sniff and it just completely envelops your sinuses - love it. For taste it immediately lets you know that it was hanging out with those Port casks as walnut and chocolate besiege your mouth. There is an odd, long burn on the first few sips but then it dissipates. Again, there is a lot going on with this whisky so I'm sure every person would have something different to say about it.
Overall I think this is a great scotch to start your own journey with. It has enough complexity that you'll be confused at first but I wouldn't be surprised if you kicked back a few glasses of it. As always feel free to add a couple drops of water if you want to calm down some of the EXCITEMENT in the glass. I think this particular scotch would pair crazy well with a tiramisu so someone do that and tell me if I'm right!
