2016 Pedernales Tempranillo Review
So I'm probably being a bit of a dick but this is a bland ass wine which is often the trademark characteristic of a tempranillo (that I have experienced). Tempranillo is supposed to be a full-bodied wine but what people forget is "European full-bodied" is basically the equivalent of an American meth-addict. Additionally, tempranillo likes to race mix with other wines so I'm not sure if it is the desire for alliteration but I'm questioning why this Texas vintner went full on with a 100% temp.
There is no finish with this wine - you get an apology from it and some lame excuse like, "this has never happened before I just really like you." Even swishing the wine vigorously leaves no lasting, desirable taste. Like most boutique wines this one is slightly overpriced at $20 and would be a better value at $12-15.
I do however applaud Pedernales for growing their grapes on-site. I could not find any indication they used purchased, supplemented grapes which is often the practice for Texas wineries. This is a redeeming quality and it makes me want to support their operation.
Overall it is a meh wine that would be an ok gift to take to someone's house - just make sure you hide it toward the back so they don't open it while you're there.
