2013 Hugo Family Cellars “Vision Quest” Red Blend Review
This wine was given to me to review by Bad Wine Reviews loyalist, Rob Clark. Rob is good people but because I'm a fake professional I'm going to tell it like it is. I like this wine. The name is silly and the heartfelt explanation of the name on the back is eye-rolling but the wine is top notch.
Rob tells me these people are friends of his and I'm always up to the challenge of ruining friendships but sadly this is one where I hope they make it. They have the typical vintner story - bored with life, bought grapes, like wine, passion, family, enjoy, drink, buy, end scene. Good thing with this story is it ends in good wine and not cooking wine like some people do. The first thing I noticed about this bottle was it's incredibly dark purple color. That Syrah and cab really make that wine teeth-staining-purple and I love it.
Thanks to my kids, who I really love a whole bunch, I can't smell shit right now. The only thing I can smell is the sweet, sweet scent of Nyquil and the sippie cup of milk that is starting to turn hidden somewhere in my living room. So for nose notes I'm gonna guess some sort of pigeon berry.
On da palate I'm getting cranberry and pie with earthy notes on the finish. Something that I haven't decided yet on is the tannin level. I like bold tannins but this may be a bit too much - I think if they were slightly softer I would bump it to a 3.9+ range.
I highly recommend you give this wine a try. I'll be reaching out to Rob and owners to see if we can't set something up where I yell at them about their wine.
