Hunter Gatherer Brewery

I had the opportunity to hit up the Hunter Gatherer brewery in Columbia, SC last week while on the brew tour and it was definitely my favorite stop of the trip. The first check point this place got was it's in an old airplane hangar next to a still-in-operation county airport. The large bay windows and high ceilings make the place seem extremely large (well because it is, Darryl) with ample space to flail around. Another cool thing about the location is it isn't too far from that there Gamecock stadium so I can only imagine this will be a badass place to pre-game before THRILLING eastern division SEC football (I kid, I kid!).

When you get inside you come to a nice welcome area where you can go to two areas - one is the COMMONER PATRON area and I believe the other side, where we were taken, is for more private style events. This may be a lie but that's what it appeared to be. Both areas had large bars and plenty of comfortable seating for small or large groups. There is an upstairs, outdoor patio that overlooks some great scenery fit with some TVs so you can watch true western division SEC football later as well.

Because I'm a fat fatty one of the first things I noticed was the smell of DELICIOUS PIZZA! You can get pizza and some other light fare. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and a pretzel that was served with some spicy ass wasabi mustard. Both items were fantastic because again I'm a fat fatty and they lasted approximately .3 seconds on my plate.

Alright let's get to the beer. We tried four beers - Golden Ale, Session IPA, ESB and Pale Ale. From best to worst for me it was the Session IPA, Golden Ale, Pale Ale then ESB. Now that's not to say the Pale Ale and ESB were not good - they just weren't as gooder as the first two. I really enjoy Session IPAs as a rule of thumb and this one was a cut above. A lot of people love a good ol' bitter British style beer like the ESB but it just doesn't tickle my fancy as much. The Golden Ale and Pale Ales were a hair apart but I think the Golden Ale sat better with me because it was roughly 900 degrees outside. Ultimately what I think you need to do is scoot on down there on a gameday, order the pretzel and pair it with that Session IPA. That's a winner and I only recommend winners.

I truly do not have any negatives about the place. Parking was convenient and everyone was super helpful and nice. See! I can be a cool guy...

Overall this place was my favorite and had all the offerings of a comfortable, successful brewery. I highly encourage you to check this establishment out and give kudos to the staff for their great work.
